"The most dangerous man alive" - Bruce Lee
July 23, 2011 in Kansas City, KS Steve Doss was promoted to 3rd Dan Black Belt in Bushidokan Karate/Kickboxing by martial arts legend Jim Harrison. Of the many 1000′s of martial artists who have trained and learned from “The Ronin” around the world for the past 50 years, few have ever been awarded a Black Belt from him. Steve Doss is Black Belt #22, and the only Bushidokan Black Belt in Texas.
(Excerpt below from Grandmaster Magazine)
“You may know him as the Kickboxer on ESPN with the lightning fast kicks, the martial artist with advanced Black Belts in five different styles, or the skilled instructor of your Kickboxing Classes-Austin, TX being your home.
You could recognize him from any of these martial arts highlights, but Steve Doss’ life before the martial arts actually began with a bully, a little luck, and some big opportunity.
It began when the middle school bully decided it was Steve’s turn. As Doss tells it, “I went to get my friend Dirk to take care of this guy because he knew karate. But, he told me no. He said that that’s not how you use Karate, that I had to learn it and take care of this myself, and he also mentioned something about how I needed more confidence.”
Say you had to deal with a bully, learn some self-defense, and you could choose any instructor in the world to teach you. Who would you pick? How bout the man Bruce Lee called “The Most Dangerous Man Alive?” Better yet for convenience, maybe he could even be your neighbor, and your friend’s father.
That’s the lucky part – Steve grew up as a neighbor and family friend of Martial Arts legend and pioneer Jim “Ronin” Harrison!
As for opportunity, then 98 pound teenager Steve joined a very tough place, the infamous Jim Harrison’s Bushidokan Karate in Kansas City. Steve’s Instructors were some of Harrison’s trained killers, fighting champions Mark Payne and Steve Mackey.
That’s far scarier than a thousand bullies!
And what about that bully? All it took was a little confidence. “I actually forgot about the guy, I was really into going to karate,” says Doss. “One day Dirk asked me what happened to that guy. I told him that he just stopped bothering me, and I guess he moved on to someone else. He then told me that it was because I now had more confidence; I never forgot him saying that to me.”
For sure this bully didn’t move on to someone from Bushidokan!
It was with the martial arts that Steve found his passion. He has since spent much of his life traveling the world competing, learning from, and training with many of the world’s top martial artists.
Demetrius "Golden Greek" Havanas
Especially noteworthy, Steve Doss is one of only a dozen Black Belt students of the late Demetrius “Golden Greek” Havanas. “The Greek” is regarded as one the greatest competitors, kickboxers, and instructors in American Martial Arts history. Some of “The Greeks” other noteworthy students include renowned fighters Tim Kirby, Billye “Billy Jack” Jackson, Ray Munday, Troy Dorsey, Cliff “Magic” Thomas, Jeff Overturf, and Ray McCallum – the #1 Sport Karate Fighter of all time.
Steve Doss has tested his skills around the world in full-contact kickboxing. He was a featured competitor on ESPN and NBC SportsWorld, and was rated as one of the ”Top 10 Fighters in the World” by every World Kickboxing Ratings Organization. Steve settled in Central Texas in the early 1980′s and brought to Austin Kickboxing, first as a fighter, then as a promoter, and now as an instructor.
Competing in Sport Karate Competition among the best Black Belts in North America, he was won and placed in over 200 events. Some of his more notable victories include the U.S. Open Kumite Grand Champion, All-American Karate Championships Sparring Grand Champion, and California State Black Belt Sparring Champion.
Have you seen the movie Bloodsport? It was not fiction for Steve Doss. In 1990, he traveled to Pusan, Korea to enter the Korean National Martial Arts Championships. Competing in the Heavyweight division, he defeated several of Korea’s best fighters, and KO’d the defending Korean National Champion with a head kick, on his way to winning the title of Heavyweight Champion. In the final bouts, he was the Grand Champion runner-up, and the first foreigner to ever win such a competition in Korea!
Unique for a fighter, as Doss’ fighting career wound down, he shifted gears and sought out and trained with many of the world’s most notable traditional martial arts Instructors, including Dr. He Young Kimm, the Grandmaster of Han Mu Do. Doss has earned and been awarded Advanced Black Belt Ranking in five different styles.
In 1984 Master Doss opened a martial arts school in Austin, TX and has since produced many top competitors and Black Belt students.”
